THE Daily Echo takes another glimpse back through time - this week to April 1959.
These photographs show a variety of happenings in Hampshire at the time - including a visit from a popular actor and singer of the time.
Maltese-born American Joseph Calleia, star of films such as Touch of Evil, Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book and Algiers, was in Southampton on board Queen Mary. He was accompanied by his wife Eleonore Vassallo.
April was the month in which the official name of the administrative county of Hampshire changed from "County of Southampton" to "County of Hampshire".
While all of this was taking place locally, these events were unfolding nationally:
April 2
Cow & Gate merged with United Dairies to create Unigate Dairies. The company has been owned by Greencore since November 2011.
April 22
Ballerina Margot Fonteyn was released from a Panamanian prison after having been detained for her suspected involvement in a planned coup against the government of President Ernesto de la Guardia. She was deported to New York City.
April 30
British trawlers were fired upon by an Icelandic gunboat in the first of the Cod Wars regarding fishing rights.
