A FIERCE struggle developed for the top places in the Hampshire Double FITA Star archery tournament at Monksbrook, Southampton.
The shoot became a battle against the weather when the competitors experienced strong winds and rain.
An early break was called during the second distance because of a thunder storm.
Another two dozen arrows were then shot to the accompaniment of thunder, lightning and rain, but the shoot was then abandoned.
Despite the weather, the tournament was a particular success for Roy Harris, of BAT club, who led the men’s scores throughout the first day until near the end when the former champion, Roy Matthews, moved one point ahead of him.
Matthews wasn’t shooting on the second day and Harris resumed his place at the head of the men’s event. However, he was overtaken by Peter Arnold of the British national squad.
Pauline Edwards won the two-day woman’s event.
