A SOUTHAMPTON man has died after an assault outside a city pub.

Perry Cardy, 52, suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident, outside the Bittern in Thornhill Park Road on Friday night.

Mr Cardy, who lived on the same road as the pub, was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

However, police confirmed Mr Cardy died in hospital yesterday.

Now police have launched an investigation, and have arrested two men, including one on suspicion of Mr Cardy’s murder.

Following the news of his death, tributes poured in on social media.

One Facebook user said: “Known Perry years. Lovely bloke. RIP Perry.”

Another user said: “Gutted. RIP Perry.”

A third added: “Thoughts go out to your family and friends.”

Police say two men, aged 27 and 39, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The 27-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and the 39-year-old has been arrested on conspiracy to murder.

Hampshire Constabulary are appealing for information in connection to the incident, which happened outside the pub at around 9.50pm.

Detective Inspector Lee Macarthur from the force’s Major Crime team said: “We want to hear from you if you were in the Bittern Public House at this time.

“You can either call us on 101 or use the link below to directly submit information to the investigation team.

“Any information you have may be relevant, no matter how insignificant it may appear to be.

“If you have any video footage or pictures then please upload them.”

The pub has been closed since the incident took place.

Nearby resident Colin Cooper said: “I’ve been here since 1986 and I’ve never heard of anything like that happen in the area.

“You don’t really expect something like this to happen so close.

“I hope the pub can come back from this.

“We need to have it in the area, and I campaigned for it to remain open instead of being turned into a McDonald’s.

“I can’t see it shutting for one incident.”

Another resident, June Bailey, added: “I’m really sorry to hear that someone has died.

“I don’t go there often, but it has recently been taken over by new owners.

“Me and my friend went a few weeks ago and the landlord and everyone were all really nice. It’s such a shame.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting Operation Bonham.
