WITH Easter, dependent on the phases of the Moon, being as early as March 22 and as late as April 25, isn’t it about time Easter Day was fixed as the first Sunday in April?

This year, with it falling on April 21, it has meant that the two-week school holiday has been taken entirely before Easter, no doubt because spreading them equally either side of Easter would have complicated and condensed the school summer term.

Another bank holiday looms as soon as May 6 and yet another on May 27.

I would suggest that the Easter Sunday continue as a bank holiday fixed as above, with stores closed, and with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, all other bank holidays, including Good Friday and Easter Monday, be done away with and the days lost be added to each person’s annual leave entitlement.

Bank holidays stem from a time when they were the only holidays workers were given and were a wonderful innovation.

In these days, when workers get anything from three to ten weeks’ annual leave, bank holidays are obsolete and cause disruption to commerce and industry, and unnecessary congestion everywhere else.
