RUNNERS taking part in the Southampton marathon are being offered free travel by a local bus company.

Bluestar and sister company Unilink are showing their support for sporting events in the city by offering free travel for those taking part in the ABP Southampton Marathon due to take place next month.

For free travel throughout Sunday, May 5, all participants need do is show their race number or official event ID to bus drivers.

“The ABP Southampton Marathon is one of the south coast’s premier sporting events and involves a great number of local people - as well as many from further field - whether they are running, officiating or volunteering,” said Bluestar and Unilink managing director, Andrew Wickham.

“We have previously supported participants and are doing the same this year because we want to encourage as many people as possible to leave their cars at home.

“We know how important this event is to the city, and want to play our part in helping it run as smoothly as possible.

“I’d like to wish all those involved the very best of luck for a successful event - whether they are running or part of the organising team.”

The marathon was expected to sell-out, with 10,000 runners signed up, and looks set to draw 20,000 spectators.

Last years event sold out in record time, with over £500k raised for charity. The city saw 30,000 spectators and an estimated £1m spent in the city over that weekend, due to the event.

The event features a marathon, half marathon, a 10k and a children’s fun run.

All races will start and finish in the city centre, with the course taking runners into iconic city landmarks including the Itchen Bridge before finishing by the Guildhall.
