POLICE were called to an incident on the M27 after calls were made about a woman's welfare.

The motorway was closed near junction five on the westbound carriageway following the incident, which happened at about 9pm on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the scene, before the road reopened at about 11.30pm.

The police arrived after there was concern about the welfare of an individual.

A woman was taken to hospital.

Police later condemned motorists who gathered on an M27 bridge to take photos of the aftermath of an incident.

Following the incident Hants Roads Policing took to Twitter and wrote: "In policing we see the positives and the negatives of human nature.

"On a positive note we were inundated with calls from the public regarding someone on a bridge over the M27 in distress.

"As a negative, there were large groups gathered on the bridge taking photos of the aftermath.

"Is that how you would like your loved ones to find out something had happened to you?"
