A SILENT walk will be held in the heart of Southampton in remembrance of the 72 people who died in the Grenfell Tower.

The walk is being organised by Shokraneh Moghadam, a PhD Psychology student at the University of Winchester, and will be held on May 14.

Residents of Grenfell Tower and the surrounding area were left homeless and over 11,000 people were severely traumatised by the fire. Approximately 500 buildings across the UK are still covered in flammable cladding, with nearly half of them being social housing.

Shokraneh said the walk is an opportunity for Southampton to "continue its solidarity and stand united with the North Kensington/Latimer community who were affected by the Grenfell Tower fire".

She has come into contact with young people affected by the fire through her volunteering work with local project ‘Kids on the Green’ based in Latimer, North Kensington.

Shokraneh added: "There are still people who are fighting for justice and this walk is to say we have not forgotten about your struggle. We all live in houses that could go up in flames so we all want to live in safe housing.

"I remember when we had a small fire in a Shirley block and it was so dangerous to the point where two firefighters lost their lives. Grenfell could happen again. It could happen tomorrow."

The walk will start at the Bargate, High Street, and finish at the O2 Guildhall Square, Above Bar Street. Participants will gather from 6pm and begin walking at 6.30pm.

Shokraneh said the walk will allow Southampton residents to keep "in touch with the community and people can bring candles, which I think will be a nice touch."

She added: "Last year's march was really good as we made a film out of it and it was really great to say we had people come together. We had the faces of people who passed away in the fire which is quite a sensitive thing to do."

Keynote speakers will start and end the march, including Southampton City Council cabinet member for Homes and Culture, Councillor. Satvir Kaur.
