Grange Farm at Tichborne, near Alresford, has diversified into wine-making with two fields now set aside for vines.

The nature of the English climate is such that cold nights can damage, even destroy, young tender shoots well into June.

Meanwhile, the cellar door at Grange Farm is open to the public for wine tastings and sales this weekend, Friday-Sunday, May 10-12 11am-3pm as part of the Vineyards of Hampshire wine trail.

Hampshire now has a number of successful vineyards producing high-quality usually white vine, including Hattingley Valley near Alresford and Three Choirs at Wickham.

The county’s chalky soil is very similar to that of the Champagne region in northern France.

Global warming over the next 20-30 years is expected to make the local climate even more conducive to wine-growing and the number of vineyards is expected to grow.
