FORMER Saints star Gareth Bale has narrowly missed out on top spot in a list of the richest young sports stars.

The Real Madrid winger finished behind golf superstar Rory McIlory in a list of the wealthiest sports stars under the age of 30.

Bale, who scored his 100th goal for the Spanish side in February, netted £20m over the last year – bringing his total wealth to £94 million.

Irish golfer McIlroy saw his wealth climb £28m to £138m, in a year in which he became just the second British winner of Players Championship, after Sandy Lyle in 1987.

Man City striker Sergio Aguero finished third, netting £10m to secure a total wealth of £58m.

Anthony Joshua, in fourth, was the only other non-footballer in the list.

Premier League superstars Eden Hazard and Paul Pogba featured, with Chelsea forward Willian completing the top 10.

The figures come from the new edition of The Sunday Times Rich List, to be published this Sunday, May 12.
