IT IS often said that there is nothing wrong with a bit of friendly competition.
But what happens when your competition is also your dearly beloved?
That’s something a Southampton butcher had to face, when both he and his wife made the cut for a national food award.
Simon Broadribb, of Uptons of Basset, was pitched against his wife Katarina, rival competitor and owner of cookery school Lemon & Soul, in a bid to be crowned the UK”s best sandwich and food to go creator in this year’s The Sammies.
The competition is held by the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association and both Simon and Katrina prepared and presented their creations to a panel of judges.
Katarina impressed the judges with her smokey lentil pot in the food to go category, yet Simon came
home as overall winner in the Sam Browne Foods shredded duck category, with his duck wraps.
Celebrity judge Theo Randall described the entry as “the clear winner.”

Simon who has been running Uptons Butchers for the past 26 years and the delicatessen for the past two said he was “so surprised” to win his category.
He said: “I didn’t think I had a chance and myself and Katarina did not expect to both be in the final.
Katarina added:”Im so pleased about the award.
“We have both been doing this competition for five year and we know how hard it is to get to the finals.
“It’s a great competition to get involved with as it gives you the opportunity to try new recipes.”
When asked if she was dissapointed about not winning her catregory Katarina laughed and said: “I’m not a good loser.”
The couple, from Chandlers Ford said they would “definitely” be entering next year.
Simon added:”We love to introduce new flavour combinations to our popular steak bar and deli menu.
“It’s great to highlight different meats, and to have the chance to share our creations with the industry experts,
but most of all we look forward to sharing them with our customers.”
We all enjoy a sandwich, whether it’s lunch on the go or the chance for a quick bite to eat with a friend. The
Sammies celebrate the sandwich and food to go sector, recognising excellence and innovation from the
industry’s finest, held at the prestigious Royal Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday May 9th.
34 awards were given out during the course of the evening.
