A HAMPSHIRE school group is doing its part to promote cycling safety.

The Berrywood School Association has organised a cycle session to help children get their bikes ready for the summer.

Staff from Halfords will be going to the school to check helmets, chains and the roadworthiness of the students' bikes on May 23.

They will also mark the bikes with postcodes to prevent possible theft.

The association is made up of volunteers who organise school events to bring the school community together and raise funds for the school in the face of budget cuts.

It hopes to raise money from the safety initiative by charging £2 for each child which will take place between 3.15pm and 4pm.

Event organiser and vice chair of Berrywood PTA, said: "We are lucky that Halfords has agreed to support our cycling safety initiative. I have four boys who all cycle, so safety is a major concern for me. Children can really hurt themselves on the roads."

Earlier in the month the Big Bike Revival returned to the Southampton area and will be running up until July 27.

The three-month nationwide project aims to help people get their bikes back in working order and give them the confidence to start riding.

Cycling UK is supporting local community groups to take part in Big Bike Revival by providing small grants that enable them to run their own biking activities.

The project is funded by the Department for Transport and has been running since 2015 and supports cycling groups at a local level by holding public events to break down the barriers to cycling that many people face.

Cycling UK is the national cycling charity aiming to inspire, encourage and help people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy cycling more often and safely.

On May 23, a bike pit stop will be set up on Guildhall Square, it is free and will be there from 11am to 2pm.

Cyclists will be able to get free advice on maintenance and try a selection of bikes including e-bikes, folding bikes, hybrids and tandems.
