A HAMPSHIRE man has smashed the world record for climbing six of the worlds highest mountains in just over four weeks.

Nirmal 'Nims' Purja, from Eastleigh, has succeeded in the first phase of his goal which is to speed climb the 14 highest mountains in the world in 7 months.

The former British soldier was the first Gurkha to join the Special Boat Service and has three world records for speed climbing to his name.

The 35-year-old had to climb the world's deadliest mountain, Annapurna, nearly four times in order to fix lines and ensure the narrow window for the summit was hit.

A spokesperson for Project Possible said: "We have to wait until Guinness World Records verify the climbs, but we think there are a number of records that have not only been broken but smashed.

"Not least of which is Nims’ own record of Everest, Lohtse & Makalu which stood at five days - we believe he has just done it in 48 hours and 30 minutes, having already climbed the worlds tenth, seventh and third highest peaks.

"We have yet to speak to Nims as his priority will be speaking with his wife and family who have endured some anxious moments over the last four to five weeks.

They added: "It is clear that Nims has missed some summit windows due to the weather and unforeseen, and very tragic, rescues. He will be pursuing his bid to climb the worlds 14 highest mountains in 7 months once he has had some rest.

"He will be looking forward to seeing his wife who has flown over from the UK to be with him in the celebration of the end of this first phase and also to enjoying some proper food!

"Everyone at Project Possible is extremely grateful for the support on social media and especially those who have become our partners through sponsorship on this challenge and those who have donated to keep this project on the road.

"With a positive mindset all things are possible and this is our fundamental belief in Team Project Possible."
