A FAST food restaurant in Southampton is set to reopen in June after a refurbishment is carried out.

The McDonald's outlet in Millbrook plans to add an extra lane to the drive-through area of its Redbridge Road restaurant.

Renovations also include an extension of 23sqm to the current building and a new “folded roof” design, to bring it up to date with the chain’s more modern outlets.

The reconfiguration of the drive-through lane at the restaurant, which is owned and operated by franchisee Bryan Rupping, will introduce what the chain describes as “side-by-side ordering”.

This involves building an island between two lanes and the introduction of additional signage.

The fast-food chain’s bosses say that the renovations will allow them to stream-line the ordering process and reduce congestion from cars on the site.

Six car parking spaces will be lost. As reported by the Daily Echo in February 2018, the fast food chain had submitted planning permissions for a single storey extension and alterations to the drive-thru amid complaints from locals.

Redbridge councillor, Catherine McEwing, had objected to the proposals, over fears the extension would impact residents in nearby Green Park Road.

She said: “Last year I had several residents contact me complaining about noise and light for the site.

Extending the building will cause more inconvenience for residents. The hours for this building have already been extended for early mornings until midnight and you get deliveries in before it opens.”
