Organisers of Newtown Carnival say they're ready to go for the annual summer extravaganza, and are hoping to bring the whole town together for a weekend of fun.

The Carnival takes place Saturday, June 8,with a bustling parade, Silver and Brass bands, a licensed bar, food stalls, a duck race set to head up a busy entertainment programme.

Assembling at Lower Canal Road, the parade will set off at 12.30pm, led by Newtown Carnival King and Queen, Harvey Challoner and Siannon McBride and their attendants.

The procession will then turn right at Cambrian Way and follow the road on to Commercial Street, turning left at the roundabout onto Longbridge street before going down broad street, turning right on to the High Street and another right going in to Back Lane before arriving at the Town Hall grounds by 1.15pm.

Music will be provided by Newtown Silver Band while people disembark from the floats.

The Newtown Carnival King and Queen will be officially crowned at 1.45pm and from 2pm the winners of the floats and pedestrians will be announced.

The following day, on Sunday, June 9, the eight annual Silver/brass band march and hymn competition takes place in Newtown with organisers promising a brass band spectacular at the ‘Newtown March and Open-Air Brass Band Contest’.

The competition attracts bands from all over the Principality and from over the border, with the first band marching along High Street through the Town Hall gates to the park at 11am, where they will each play a hymn tune, a contest march and an entertainment piece. This year the competition will attract an entry of eleven bands, while organisers believe the 300 strong rendition of Slaidburn will be the largest brass band ever to be assembled in Wales

Organiser Jen Reynolds said: "This is a good way of bringing the whole of Newtown together for a weekend.

"I'm looking forward to it, but the rest of this week will be stressful as we finish getting everything ready."
