SOUTHAMPTON Spartans Korfball Club made it to the final of the England Korfball Promotional League playoffs on the weekend, coming second against Highbury Korfball Club.

The team, who train at Oasis Academy in Lords Hill, won the semi-final on Saturday 1 June against Bearsted Korfball Club, the winners of the South/East Promo League, and played in the final on the Sunday.

The Southampton club were drawing with the other team but lost to Highbury Korfball Club after they scored a goal in the last twenty seconds of the game.

Amy Archer, from Southampton Spartans Korfball Club, said: "It was absolutely amazing, we won 22-21 against Bearsted in the semi-finals and then went on to the final, which was another nail-biting game!

"We ended up losing by one goal in the final few seconds but it was an incredible experience and the whole team played really well."  

The winners of the match have secured a place in the England Korfball League, the highest standard of Korfball in England.

The Spartans were also runners up in the Western Regional League with player Tom Kelly scoring the highest number of goals of any player in the entire division.

David Creed, Spartans coach and club co-founder, said: "I’m so proud of how far we’ve come as a club.

"Korfball is a fantastic sport that continues to grow in popularity, and we’re delighted to see Southampton being put on the map."

The sport is like basketball and netball, with the game’s main aim to throw a ball through a goal or ‘korf’, a plastic basket on a pole 3.5 metres above the ground within 60 minutes.
