THE SOUTHAMPTON route map for this summer's biggest cycling event has just been revealed.

Thousands of cyclists are set to take to the city streets on July 21 as the Southampton Cycling Festival returns for another year.

Let’s Ride Southampton will be taking place on Sunday and encourages residents of all ages to take to two wheels and cycle the streets.

Southampton City Council, British Cycling, and HSBC UK and have confirmed the route which riders will take as they pedal their way through the city.

The free-to-attend event will start from St Mary’s Stadium at 11am, with live music and a host of family-friendly activities taking place along the 6.25km course.

Winding around Southampton cyclists will make their way through Queens Park, Hoglands Park, Guildhall and back to the stadium.

Finishing at 3pm, there is a shorter loop on offer for those looking for an easier circuit to ride, participants are invited to cycle the course as many times as they wish at their own pace.

Other attractions on the day include food and drink stalls, a stunt show, face painting, and a children’s learn to ride programme

CEO of British Cycling, Julie Harrington said: "Southampton played host to a fantastic event last year, and we’ve worked hard - alongside Southampton City Council and local businesses and attractions - to ensure that HSBC UK Let’s Ride Southampton will again be a truly enjoyable, free and family-friendly day out which showcases the best of the city and the real benefits of cycling."

Head of HSBC UK’s partnership with British Cycling, said:

“Taking part in the event is a great opportunity to get on a bike around Southampton without traffic, seeing its landmarks from a completely different viewpoint.

“These events provide a great day out for families, those who want to get back on their bike after allowing it to collect dust at home, or for the more regular or serious bike user who wants to try something a bit more relaxed. Plus, you will be doing your bit to help create a greener, fitter, healthier Britain.”

The event promises to be traffic-free which will be ensured by road closures throughout the city to mark the route.
