STAFF at pubs and bars have been warned not to work alone at night after a spate of armed robberies, one of which involved a sawn-off shotgun.

Knives, axes, a crowbar and golf clubs have been used during the frightening attacks, which happen near closing time. Victims have been hurt even when they’ve complied with the robbers’ demands.

Police are facing questions about why the seriousness of the raids has not been made public until recently. Officers have called for the public to come forward with any information about the incidents, but without mentioning that weapons were used.

The pubs targeted were:

  • The Bold Forester in Beaulieu Road, near Marchwood, just after 11pm on May 21
  •  The Walnut Tree Farm pub in Adanac Drive, Nursling, sometime between 11.50pm and midnight on May 5
  • The Malvern pub in Winchester Road, Southampton, shortly after 11.45pm on May 17

An email written by PC Brian Swallow of Hampshire police has been sent out to venues in the New Forest recently.

The officer says three pubs had been robbed in the past few weeks.

“At or near closing times, masked robbers enter the pub wielding weapons,” he said.

“Knives, axes, hammers, golf clubs and a crow bar have all been brandished and used to threaten staff who demand access to the safe, tills and cigarettes.

“In the last instance a sawn off shotgun was used.

“Staff have been physically assaulted even when complying with demands.

“I am requesting that your venues are contacted where possible and made aware of this crime series, firstly for their safety, but secondly to ensure that, where applicable and available, CCTV is functioning correctly and serviced and any panic alarm installed is working.

“I would also strongly advise that lone working is discouraged during these times. If leaving the site following the closure, be aware of vehicles in car parks or being followed.”

When asked about the warning, a Hampshire Constabulary spokesman confirmed that the robberies were still being investigated and that no arrest have been made.
