SOUTHAMPTON Hospital charity Leukaemia Busters turns 30 this year.

The charity was started up by three sets of parents whose children were receiving chemo-radiotherapy with negative side-effects - one set of them being parents to nine-year-old boy Simon Flavell, who lost his fight to leukaemia in 1990 - and their anniversary takes place on Saturday July 29.

The Daily Echo held a year-long campaign to raise funds for Leukaemia Busters in the early 90s, leading to the Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Laboratory first being opened at Southampton General Hospital.

The charity are hosting a ball for their anniversary celebration at 7pm on Saturday October 12.

Tickets will cost £60 while past and present patrons, fund-raising presidents, ambassadors, celebrities and supporters will be attending the event.
