A NURSERY in Woolston was targeted after its windows were smashed in the early hours of Thursday morning.

One male made his way through a double-fixed security window at YMCA Nursery Woolston after climbing the back gate and chucking a brick through it.

He then got into the nursery’s baby room, walked through the toddler room and smashed the office windows with a fire extinguisher to gain access - where he stole a safe holding £400 - and completely trashed the building.

Glass was left everywhere, including remains left on teddies that children usually play with.

The nursery was closed on Thursday morning, but re-opened by the afternoon.

Alison Murray, the nursery’s community manager, said: “One of our staff saw the smashed windows on Thursday morning, but waited for a second member of staff in case someone was still in there.

“We found out that the burglar came at 1:46am and stole the safe."

She added: “It’s not just the money stolen but the damages - the windows will cost £5,000 to £6,000 to replace.”

Sheila Elsey, a Co-op member pioneer who supports the nursery, said: “I was meant to be there on Thursday morning and got the call to say they would have to cancel as someone smashed their way through the baby room and smashed windows in the office, so we are going to put in for a small community heavy to replace toys, rugs and equipment.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: “We were called at 7.06am on 4 July with reports of a burglary at a nursery on Victoria Road, Woolston.

“Some time overnight on the 3 July into the early hours of 4 July, entry was gained via the back of the nursery, and a safe containing cash was stolen from inside.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44190230856.”
