IF YOU never throw away your food, you may be contributing to the 43% of Southampton people who make the city the "most frugal in the UK".

New research by discount website Voucher Codes has found that the average UK household throws away £6.84 of unused food every week, which adds up to £355.68 worth of food each year and £9.7 billion across the country.

However, the study involving 2000 UK adults found that 43 percent of respondents who make the city the "most frugal" - which means that they are economical when it comes to money or food - stated that they never throw away or waste food.

65 percent of adults in the UK buy "too much food" which ends up being thrown away, while 80 percent of 18 to 34 year olds admitted to throwing food away each week.

The age category that involves less than half of them throwing out food are over-55s, with 47 percent claiming that they never throw their food away.

One in seven shoppers were also found to pay a premium for certain brands, and among those favourites were tea, coffee, and chocolate, whereas necessities like cleaning products, kitchen roll, and dry or tinned goods are most likely to be bought from a supermarket's own value range.
