MORE than 40 firefighters were called to tackle a wildfire which broke out on Hampshire heathland.

Crews battled for more than seven hours to put out a blaze at Browndown Ranges, Gosport.

Portchester fire station received an emergency call at 9.28pm on Friday and arrived at the scene shortly after.

Six water pumps, three land rovers, two water carriers and a wild fire unit at were all on the scene where around two hectares of gorse and undergrowth were set alight.

Crews remained in the area all night damping down undergrowth so it would not re-ignite.

The fire was extinguished at 4.42am on Saturday.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue statement said: “Two hectares of heath and gorse were destroyed in the fire which was stopped using seven hose reels.

“Firefighters will return to reinspect the scene throughout the day to ensure there are no further hotspots.”

No one was reported as injured.
