A SOUTHAMPTON man turned to stealing cans of deodorant after a lapse in his benefits, a court has been told.
Gary Bailey was on Carer's Allowance for being a full-time carer for his mother.
But Southampton Magistrates' Court was told by Bailey's defence solicitors that the 46-year-old had faced difficulties receiving benefits and turned to crime to supplement his income.
The court was told how committed four thefts from Wilko in Shirley, Southampton, between April and May this year.
He stole a total of £189 worth of items, including deodorant and laundry products.
The court heard that Bailey sold the items on and they were never recovered.
Bailey, of Howards Grove, Southampton, pleaded guilty to four counts of theft.
Magistrates sentenced him to a 12 month conditional discharge.
He was also ordered to pay back the £189 in compensation, as well as a £50 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
