SOUTHAMPTON residents will be able to enjoy sea, sunshine and sand without having to book a holiday abroad this summer

Guildhall Square is set to be turned into an "urban beach" complete with sand, beachside bar and places to relax.

The Seaside in the Square event offers something to do for all ages including live music, comedy and theatre, sandcastle building competitions, a seaside bar as well as an outdoor cinema.

Also on offer will be live music, craft workshops, fitness classes, yoga and skateboarding.

Taking place from July 19 to August 11 the beach is open every day from early morning to late evening however from 7pm entry is for over 18s only.

Carnival UK has stepped on board as headline sponsor of the event.

Giles Semper, chief executive of GO! Southampton, which organises the event, said: “We’re thrilled to have the backing of Carnival for the second Seaside in the Square. We are hugely grateful to the company for supporting this showpiece event, to which all the city’s residents and workers are welcome. We look forward to making the event an even bigger success with them on board.”
