Firefighters in Workington tackled three fires in three hours.

Two crews were called to the first of the incidents at just before 6pm yesterday, in the open at Salterbeck.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival crews found 30m by 10m of grass burning adjacent to the railway.

"Crews extinguished the fire using beaters and water backpacks.

"Fire crews remained on scene for approximately one hour."

The next call came at 7.15pm and the crew scrambled to Northside to a refuse fire.

The spokesman continued: "On arrival crews found one large quantity of refuse well alight.

"Crews extinguished the fire using breathing apparatus and one hose reel.

"Fire crews remained on scene for approximately 15 minutes."

The final emergency in the three hours of flames came when another grass fire erupted at Salterbeck just before 9pm.

The spokesman added: "Crews found 50m by 5m of burning grass which was extinguished using one hose reel.

"Fire crews remained on scene for approximately one hour."
