A HAMPSHIRE care service will continue being monitored by the the care watchdog after being rated as ‘requires improvement’ for a second year.

The news comes after the Care Quality Commission published a report last week on Fairhaven Healthcare Ltd.

The domiciliary care agency was established in 2008 and provides healthcare services in Southampton, Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport, Whiteley to people who can benefit from assistance with things like personal care, light domestic duties, shopping, medication management, companionship and more.

Overall, the service was rated as requiring improvement, although it was rated as good for ‘caring’.

At the time of the inspection in May, the service was providing care to 37 people in their own homes.

The report said: “Risks to people were not always effectively identified and managed to ensure people were appropriately protected.

“Medicines were not always safety managed in line with best practice guidance.”

It added the service had “limited quality assurance processes in place to monitor the delivery of people’s care” and that “people’s rights and freedoms were not always protected”.

It did however state: “People told us staff were caring and supported people to maintain their privacy and dignity.

“Morale amongst staff was positive and staff told us they felt supported in their role by the general manager.”

It follows another report last May when the service was also rated as requiring improvement.

That report said: “People were not always supported to take their medicines safely and relevant national guidelines were not always followed in relation to the safe administration and management of medicines.”

During the inspection the CQC gathered information from ten people using the service, four friends and relatives of people using the service the general manager, four members of staff, audits and quality assurance reports, medicine administration records, three staff records including recruitment practices and the care records for five people.

The Care Quality Commission are set to continue to monitor the service.

The report said: “Until the provider can show they are compliant with the fundamental standards in the regulations, we will continue to monitor the provider’s progress in line with our published protocol for services rated requires improvement.

“These procedures will include meeting with the provider and requesting an agreed improvement plan with timescales.”

Fairhaven Healthcare Ltd has been contacted for comment but were unable to before going to press.
