A VIDEO showing a Southampton footbridge being removed as a part of a multimillion-revamp project has been released by highways chiefs.

The footbridge crossing part of Redbridge Roundabout was taken down over the weekend.

The work was part of a Highways England upgrade scheme to improve the roundabout, which links the M271 to the A33.

It resulted in the closure of the north-eastern section of the roundabout from Friday night until around 9pm on Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: “We worked hard to minimise the disruption drivers experienced while we undertook the footbridge demolition and we’re pleased to see how successful it went.

“The demolition was completed ahead of schedule and we were able return the road to usual running by 9pm Saturday night.”

Highways chiefs say they plan to install a new “wider and less steep” bridge later this year.

The spokesperson added: “We now look forward to the installation of the new bridge in October.”

The work is part of a major Highways England improvement project, which is set to cost between £8.5 million and £15.5 million.

The project includes adding an extra lane to ease congestion for vehicles travelling from the motorway to the city centre and the port.

A shared-use path will be built on the southern side of the roundabout.

The scheme will also see improvements made to the subway by Gover Road.

The work began in May and is expected to run until Spring 2020.

Following this section of the work, Highways England also released a short time-lapse video, showing the bridge being removed and placed onto the roundabout.
