YOUNG SCOUTS from Eastleigh have launched a campaign to recruit more volunteers.

The Scouts need new adult volunteers to supervise and lead their groups.

Without them, no more prospective Scouts or Guides can join and instead they remain on waiting lists.

The Scouts will be building sandcastles at Eastleigh Town Centre Urban Beach on Saturday, August 17 to launch their recruitment drive.

Before new adults commit, they will be invited to work with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers for four weeks.

Adults don’t have to be a parent to be part of Eastleigh’s great leadership team, and even those who can only spare an hour a month are welcome.

Boss of Eastleigh District’s 799 Scouts Dick Whittington said: “Scouting is thriving with 6% growth last year. Our activities are all about providing young people with Skills for Life. For every new adult volunteer, we can invite another 5 local youngsters to gain these important transferable skills.”

He added: "When did you last climb a tree, cook over an open fire, canoe across a lake, climb the highest hill, camp under the stars or laugh until your sides split? You could do all this and more as an adult volunteer with Eastleigh Scouts."

Eastleigh’s newest adult volunteer is 26-year-old Helen Hutchings, a chartered accountant, who said: "Since volunteering, I have felt very welcome and supported, and I’ve already had some great adventures each time I’ve taken part.”
