A GOSPORT man who stole £2,000 of wine from an Italian restaurant has been jailed.

Stewart Lester Gibson, 38, entered Villa Romana in Fareham High Street and stole the wine, said to be worth £2,000.

He also failed to surrender to Portsmouth Magistrates' Court after being released on bail and failed to comply with a previous community order.

During a hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates Court, Gibson admitted breaching his community order and pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to bail.

He denied the theft from Villa Romana, but was found guilty in his absence.

Gibson, of Cornwell Glose, Gosport, was jailed for a total of 24 weeks.

This included a 30 day sentence from a previous offence of handling a stolen charity pot and cash register, for which he was resentenced.
