A PERSON has died after being hit by a train at Eastleigh Station today.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident but the person was declared dead a the scene.

The incident caused severe disruption to Bank Holiday travellers.

Eastleigh station was shut and services between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour, Weymouth to Poole and Salisbury and Romsey were all  affected.

All the lines have since reopened however no trains are stopping at Eastleigh station.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are now working to establish the identity of the person and inform their next of kin.

A file will be prepared for the coroner after the incident which happened at 8.43am today.

A BTP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Eastleigh Station on Monday, August 26 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

"Both officers from the BTP and Hampshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to us at 8.43am and is currently being treated as non- suspicious.

"Paramedics from the ambulance service also attended but the person was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

A South Western Rail spokesperson said: "Following the emergency services dealing with an incident between Southampton Airport and Basingstoke lines have now reopened.

"Train services running through Eastleigh Station will be cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until 5pm today.”
