A HAMPSHIRE MP has praised the work of the emergency services after a person was struck by a train over the bank holiday weekend.

Police and paramedics rushed to Eastleigh Railway Station on Monday after reports of a person being struck by a train.

The person was declared dead at the scene.

Police have not released their identity, though they say they are preparing a report for the coroner.

Following the incident, Mims Davies, who is the MP for Eastleigh, praised the work of those who attended the incident.

In a statement, on social media site Twitter, she said: “I am so very sorry to hear of this fatality and the truly upsetting impact on those waiting for their trains standing nearby.

“Again our brilliant emergency services are in assistance at a difficult time.

“My thoughts with everyone affected by the very sad events at the station.”

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident at 8.45am, but the person was declared dead at the scene.

The incident caused severe disruption to bank holiday travellers.

Eastleigh station was shut and services between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour, Weymouth to Poole and Salisbury and Romsey were affected.

Passenger Daisy Hanley said: “I was travelling from Hedge End to meet my boyfriend when it happened.

“I am still in shock. When I got off the train I saw people on the platform crying. Luckily I did not have my young daughter with me because she would have been upset.”

Another passenger added: “I got to Eastleigh train station at about 8.45am and the train I was travelling on is still here two hours later.

“I am travelling to the Midlands from Portsmouth. It is a very sad thing to happen.”

A BTP spokesperson said: “Officers from the BTP and Hampshire police attended the incident. It is currently being treated as non-suspicious.”
