SAINTS will play fierce rivals Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

It will be the first time the two sides have met since April 2012, which ended in a 2-2 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Premier League team’s previous match on away soil against their fierce rivals came back in December 2011, with that fixture also ending in a tie.

You have to go back to January 2005 to find the last time Saints got the better of the Fratton Park side when an FA Cup match resulted in a 2-1 victory.

The Carabao Cup third round fixture will take place the week beginning Monday, 23 September.

There was a point during last season when Pompey fans thought they’d be playing Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in the Championship.

They were comfortably leading League One, with Saints hovering around the relegation zone, only for their title charge to end in disappointment and the St Mary’s side staying up.

Hasenhuttl’s team booked their place in the third round after a 1-0 win against Championship club Fulham on Tuesday.

The game was overshadowed by the injury to star player Nathan Redmond in the second half.

Redmond, who had teed up Michael Obafemi for the winner at Craven Cottage, went down unchallenged on the edge of the Fulham box.

And after receiving attention from Saints’ medical staff, he was aided off the pitch with an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old was later seen leaving the ground on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Hasenhuttl has already said that he is going to give his full attention to the cup competitions this season, having had to focus on beating relegation during the previous campaign.

Pompey cemented their place in the third-round draw following a comfortable 2-0 win away from home against QPR.
