HUNDREDS of runners laced up their running shoes to raise cash for a threatened species.

Lemurs, a type of primate unique to Madagascar, face extinction and are thought to be the world’s most endangered mammal.

Marwell, famous for its efforts to save threatened species and reintroduce them back into the wild, held its third annual fun run on September 22, 1989.

The participants ran for the Lemur Lifeline, a fund set up to raise money towards building a complex to house the zoo’s first lemurs.

An estimated 100 children did their bit for the project by running the mile-and-a-half junior circuit around the zoo.

A further 800 or so adults gritted their teeth to sweat it out over seven-and-a-half miles.

The complex was built at the zoo and provides the opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with the pretty primates.
