HUNDREDS of people last night lit up the streets of Southampton to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Covered in lights and neon, around 1,000 people participated in the charity’s first Shine Night Walk in the city.

The 10K walk around the centre of the city began at the Guildhall, where it was started by former Daily Echo journalist, Kate Taylor.

Kate, who is now working for ITV Meridian, has recently finished treatment after being diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer before Christmas last year.

BBC Radio Solent presenters Alun Newman and Lou Hannan hosted last night's event, which aimed to raise £70,000.

Cancer Research UK regional spokesperson, Jenny Makin, said: "We were absolutely delighted to put on Southampton's first-ever Shine Event and for it to have been such a success."
