A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in Penrith.

Just after 2pm on Monday, paramedics were called to action after a man was found in the disabled toilets at Sainsbury's with serious injuries.

The air ambulance was requested at 2.21pm where the team used advanced care techniques, which include blood transfusions and emergency anaesthesia, before transporting the man to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "We were alerted at 2.50pm, September, 9, by North West Ambulance Service to a report of a man having suffered serious injuries inside the disabled toilets at Sainsbury’s in Penrith.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

"He was taken to RVI."

Jim Entwistle, for Great North Air Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 2.21pm on 9th of September to Penrith near to the Sainsburys store our critical care team treated a patient using advanced care techniques.

"The patient was then airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle for further treatment."
