EASTLEIGH residents gathered as a community in memory of D-Day and the beginning of the Second World War 80 years ago.

Children were seen getting stuck in with activities and games while stalls from Forgotten Veterans to Bomb Disposal School were on hand to educate visitors during the event.

Live performances from the likes of Dame Vera Lynn tribute artist, Romsey Old Cadets Association band,14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band and many others filled Leigh Road Recreation Ground, with the sun reflecting off vintage military vehicles.

The field chosen for the event marks a special place in history as the holding area for American troops in the run-up to D Day in 1944.

Amongst the entertainment involved story telling, bubble shows, face painting, ferret racing and swing boats, swing and abstract dance, and a pop-up hairdressers, which were all provided by Eastleigh Borough Council and Eastleigh BID.

Alistair White, a member of Romsey Old Cadets Association, said: "I'm ex-army and feel absolutely proud to be here, especially as I used to live in Eastleigh."

Sargeant Stevens from Eastleigh Army Cadet Force said: "I'm 100 percent proud to be here. We were asked to come along and it's my first time at the event."
