THIS week Life Through a Lens brings the month of September 1989 back into focus.

Plenty of sport pictures were captured by Daily Echo photographers, including football teams such as West End, Sholing and Hedge End.

Former footballer, sports broadcaster and Green Party spokesman David Icke helped launch the Animal Aid Festival in Southampton. This was shortly before he wrote books which developed his worldview of New Age conspiracism.

While all the events in these pictures were taking place locally, this is what was happening nationally:

September 12

The wife of a British soldier, Heidi Hazell, was shot dead in Dortmund, West Germany.

The German citizen was murdered by the Provisional Irish Republican Army who claimed responsibility the following day.

September 26

Nigel Lawson resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer and was succeeded by John Major.
