TRAINS towards Southampton were being held on Wednesday evening after an incident near the railway between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst.

Disruption was expected until late into the night.

The exact location of the incident is not yet known.

On Wednesday evening, a spokesperson from Network Rail said: "The police are currently dealing with an incident between Brockenhurst and Bournemouth causing disruption between Southampton Central and Bournemouth / Poole.

"Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised."

Shortly before 9pm, officials from South Western Railway said: "Following the police dealing with an incident near the railway between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst all lines have now reopened. 

"Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services have been delayed. 

"Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

"Response staff along with the police have dealt with the incident and trains are now on the move.

"As the line was blocked for some time services are subject to ongoing delays.

"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point. 

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.

The Daily Echo has approached British Transport Police for comment.
