POLICE rushed to Totton this afternoon after reports of gunshots were heard by multiple residents.

Some believed that more than one loud banging sound came from near Hanger Farm at around 2.30pm.

Police said that there have been no reports of anyone spotted with a weapon.

One resident said: "It made me jump and I thought what on earth was that, so we checked outside but I didn't see anything. It sounded like gun shots. I reckon it came from over the back of the field."

Another said: "I heard three loud bangs. They were pretty loud. There were two initial bangs, then a brief five minutes of silence, but then I heard another one. I was wondering what it was."

One resident said they heard a banging sound but automatically assumed it was not a gun shot.

She said: "I heard quite a massive loud bang, which could have been a gun shot. But I automatically assumed it wasn't actually a shot because this is Totton."

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "At around 2.30pm this afternoon officers received reports of what sounded like gunshots in the Totton area.

"There have been no reports of anyone seen with a weapon. Officers are in attendance in the area."
