Saints and Pompey fans clash outside Fratton Park

Hampshire Constabulary had prepared for their largest ever football-related operation in the county, however, fans were still involved in heated exchanges.

This included in the Frogmore Road and Goldsmith Avenue area.

Police officers enforced a wall to keep fans apart but this did not prevent scenes of disorder, with coins, bottles and smoke grenades in the colours of both teams thrown, as well as pockets of abuse and violence.

The Carabao Cup fixture is the first time Saints have travelled to Fratton Park since 2011, when both teams were in the Championship.

Hampshire Constabulary drafted in officers from outside the county, including Kent and Thamas Valley forces.

Both a dispersal order and stop-and-searcg powers were initiated by police ahead of the match and remain implemented after the final whistle.

No 'bubble' was in use for travelling Saints fans, which was the case in 2011. This left police to control supporters of both teams ahead of the 7.45pm kick-off.

Resources utilised by police included horses, dogs, helicopters and drones.

The scene around the ground was largely quiet when the turnstiles opened at 6.15pm but slowly built as the match neared.

The tensions reached their peak around half an hour before kick-off as more supporters arrived around the stadium from the railway station, coaches and on foot having parked away from Fratton Park.
