THE picture above depicts the dominating presence of Tebourba Way running through the new Millbrook housing estate in 1953, linking Millbrook roundabout with the busy junction of Romsey Road and Winchester Road.
The drag was given its name to commemorate the gallant stand of The Royal Hampshire Regiment at the Battle of Tebourba, North Africa, just 11 years earlier in 1942.
Eleven AMAZING aerial pictures of Southampton in the 1920s
A plaque on the corner of Oakley Road tells of this and notes the date of opening as April 30th, 1953.
The new by-pass was considered to have been situated outside the borough of Southampton at the time, but was incorporated within the boundaries a year later in April, 1954.
