A STRANGE droning noise kept Southampton residents awake over the weekend.

The droning noise was reportedly coming from Southampton docks and was heard in Shirley and Freemantle.

One resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the docks to find out what was causing the noise.

She told the Daily Echo: "The noise started on Friday evening and carried on until Sunday.

"It was just a constant noise, it was like torture.

"It was louder sometimes due to the wind.

"We have heard it before but never for this long.

"I contacted the port authority and got a response from a man at DP World."

She added: "We often hear the banging of containers when they drop them and you expect that with living to close, but this almost went on for 48 hours."

The Echo understands that the noise was reportedly coming from the MOL Truth, a ship that arrived at the docks on Friday and left on Sunday at 6pm.

The vessel was due to depart earlier, but due to operational issues and prevailing weather conditions the sailing was delayed.

In an email to the resident, DP World explained that the noise was in relation to underdeck venting.

The vessel vents its underdeck holds in order to maintain the correct temperature of boxes in the hold.

The Daily Echo has contacted DP World Southampton and is waiting for a response.
