FOOD-fanatics can get their taste buds going at a new gourmet burger bar in Southampton.

Burga bar was opened by second year University of Southampton student Yaqub Ahmed, who decided to run the new venture alongside his Business Management studies.

Situated on Portswood Road, the 21-year-old decided to turn his regular visits to burger joints around the UK into his own business dream.

The move came after his father him encouraged him to go for it.

Seven members of staff currently work in the restaurant.

Yaqub, who is the eldest son of International Foods and Sprinkles Gelato owner Sharif Ahmed, said he will be working at the restaurant between university lectures.

He added that he will also be recruiting up to eight more staff members.

He said: “Me and my uncle had an empty shop and we had spoke about opening up a burger place, as me and my family regularly attend burger joints in London.

“My dad suggested opening up my own, so I went ahead and done it.

“We were meant to open last year but it didn’t go to plan because of university and everything. I’m glad we took our time to make the place perfect. The opening day was phenomenal.

“It’s long hours, but I don’t have to do it - I want to do it.

"I might open a new one in Portsmouth or Bournemouth if this place is successful, but we will see how it goes.”

Rashidul Islam, legal counsel for International Foods and Sprinkles Gelato, said: “The Burga bar is different to other burger joints as the burgers are grilled on the day and not fried, so we provide a healthier option.

“We are a good addition to Portswood Road and had queues forming outside on our opening day. It is not just a run of the mill place but it's funky and has its own twist to it.

He added: "It is being run by the director's son of Sprinkles so Yaqub already has experience from that background."

MP for Southampton Itchen Royston Smith also commended Yaqub on opening the restaurant.

Royston said: “I applaud the enterprise of Yaqub in starting his own business.

“It’s young entrepreneurs like this that ensure that Southampton and this country has a bright future ahead.

“I wish him luck not just in his business venture but also, and just as importantly, in his studies.”

Burga is open from 12pm to 11pm every day, but will be open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
