HUNDREDS of runners took to Southampton Common for the South's first park walk.

Residents in the city could run or jog at their own pace as part of the free weekly Park Run event, but it was the first Saturday that they could choose to walk the 5K route.

With some runners celebrating their 100th time taking part, families, prams and dogs were seen reaching the finish line and going on to collect their individual running times.

Event Director of Southampton Park Run Rob Kelly said: "We partnered up with Nuffield Wessex Hospital who encouraged their patients who had knee and hip operations to take part.

"In total we had 52 people walking. It was a really good event today, but it's a shame that we didn't bring the weather. It was the very first one in the South and those taking part were all different ages, with some coming back from injuries and some taking part as they wanted to get fit."
