A SOUTHAMPTON school is set to close today due to a power cut.

Bosses from Redbridge Community School have told the Daily Echo that a power cut has hit the Millbrook area and the school is set to close as a result.

Headteacher Jason Ashley said: "Due to a recent power outage the decision has been taken to close Redbridge Community School.

"This is because the school's systems, including water, heating and sewage are controlled by our electricity.

"Any child who is concerned about transport has been asked to report to reception and if they normally receive a free school meal limited food is available.

"The school apologises for any inconvenience and we are trying to establish an emergency message through an external internet source.

"I once again apologise to our parents for the inconvenience and look forward to seeing all students back after the half-term break."

A spokesperson for electricity firm SSE said: "Our engineers were alerted to reports of a fault on the high voltage electricity network serving Southampton at 10.08am this morning.

"This initially affected 2,721 properties in the SO16 postcode area.

"Power was restored almost instantly to 2,006 properties by innovative automated equipment installed on the network which detects where the fault is located and chooses the most suitable alternative cable circuit to switch supplies to."

The spokesperson added that all power was restored as of 11.38am.
