A POPULAR Hampshire playing field could be plunged into darkness if plans to cut lighting go ahead.

The floodlights at the college playing fields in Hamble cost the parish council approximately £1,200 each year, £30 a month in the summer, and £300 in the winter.

They are currently switched on from 5pm until 8pm between October 31 and March each year.

During the council's Asset Management Committee meeting on November 5 it was recommended that either the lights are not switched on until low energy bulbs are sourced, lit hours are reduced from 5pm to 7pm or 6pm to 8pm, the lights are switched on Friday to Sunday only or that funding is sought to contribute to the cost.
