A unique attraction in Romsey is hoping to break its record for visitors this year – and then aims to break the record yet again in 2020.
Romsey Signal Box will hold its final open day of 2019 on Sunday, December 1, and just 40 visitors will take the total to well over 1,000 in the calendar year.
Visitors are able to experience the workings of the historic signal box with a demonstration of how it operated before being closed in 1982.
The signalman on duty encourages visitors to pull the levers and operate the signals outside.
The small working museum welcomed the Romsey Town Mayor, Cllr Janet Burnage to a recent open day.
Romsey Town Council are one of several organisations which have awarded grants to the Friends of Romsey Signal Box for a new educational building which is due to be opened in June 2020.
The building has largely been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, a total £10,000 and Test Valley Borough Council, a total of £6,000, with support also coming from Hampshire County Council.
The new educational building will house a range of equipment and activities for visitors of all ages, and will enable local schools to take advantage of the signal box museum on visits.
