TEAM UK proved that they are some of the Toughest Mudders at the 'most extreme, insane, imposing, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping 24-hour obstacle course challenge on the planet.'

The duo of Kevin Southgate from Southampton and Charlie Boher from Midhurst finished third overall at the event in Atlanta, USA.

The course itself is a 5 mile long lap, consisting of 21 obstacles and 623 feet of elevation gain.

The pair won the sprint lap and then went on to run 85 miles in 24 hours of continuous obstacle racing and are the only two person British team to gain a podium place in the events 9 year history.

The race in Atlanta looked to be out of the duo's hands towards the back end of the race, Kevin said:

"I thought at that point (15 hours into the race) we were losing it, we were in a dark place mentally and Charlie has already been sick from consuming dirty water in one of the obstacles prior, but I knew I just had to keep pushing.

I continued to push relentlessly for the next 5 consecutive hours giving it everything, the sun was rising as I approached the transition area (an area to change clothes, eat and drink) Michelle Cox my other half was waiting with nutrition, she was pit crew for us for the full 24 hours, we couldn’t had done it without her for sure.

It was at the point she told me I was now 4 minutes behind 3rd place, it was at that point I got this amazing second wind of energy as I picked up the pace and took 3rd spot on the next lap."

Charlie added:

"I just remember the sigh of relief as we got to the top of the last hill and I looked over my shoulder and 4th place was not in sight.

There were 2 minutes left on the clock as we approached the finish line. What an amazing feeling!"

Kevin and Charlie are eyeing up the Europeans Toughest Mudder in the Midlands in June where they first met.

Kevin said:

"We have decided we are going to attend Toughest Mudder in LA on April 4 and Toughest Mudder in Philadelphia on the 16th May as team UK and hopefully podium at both to put UK back on the map for OCR (Obstacle course racing)."
