A HIT and run driver has destroyed a small piece of Winchester heritage.
The driver smashed into Victorian railings on Magdalen Hill the weekend before last.
Despite police inquiries he has yet to be apprehended.
The force of the impact was such that it snapped the railing post that had been made in Victorian times at the city foundry that then stood in the Brooks area.
A Winchester City Council spokesperson, said: “Council staff have been on site to assess the damage caused by this incident and have now made the area safe with temporary barriers.
"Sadly, the Victorian railings appear to be beyond repair and we will now be working to provide a replacement that is in keeping with the original.”
