THE ORGANISERS of an annual Romsey walking event are hoping to break £1,000,000 for charity next year.

The Walk the Test Way is a charity event that involves walking across Test Valley for a chosen charity.

Hosted by Rotary Club of Romsey Test, the 16th event raised more than £75,000 for a variety of charities.

"We need to raise just over £100,000 next year, which we have managed to do in previous years.

"We are not a circular walk unlike others in the country.

"Everyone will meet, once again, at Crosfield Hall then we will provide coaches to their chosen start point and walk back to Romsey."

More than 500 people took part in the walk, with each person nominating the charity they were walking for.

In total, 137 charities benefited from the walk and the charity which walkers raised the greatest sum was those who walked for ME, who will receive £6,179.

ME is a charity which fights chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a long-term illness with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness.

One walker came from Norfolk and the furthest distance was a walker who came from Tasmania.

The oldest walker was 85 and the youngest was 4 years old.

Next year, the walk will take place on Sunday, September 27 2020 and registration will start at the end of February.

This comes as Romsey town centre manager, Mark Edgerley, previously said: “This is a fabulous annual event enabling community groups and charities from Romsey and surrounding area to raise much needed funds by involving their supporters.

“Rotary Romsey Test make it so easy for organisations by dealing with all the planning and logistics to ensure a low risk safe event that is beneficial to so many in our community, what could be more enjoyable than a stroll down the beautiful Test Valley knowing you are helping a good cause.”
