A SOUTHAMPTON man caught driving while banned five times was snared for a sixth time after being involved in a crash on a busy city road.

Chris Woods also breached two suspended sentences when he was caught driving again following his involvement in a crash on the Bassett Avenue.

The 34-year-old was banned from the roads after being sentenced for another dangerous driving incident in August 2017.

After the latest incident in January, Woods attempted to run from the scene but he was snared by officers who found his DNA in the vehicle.

At Southampton Crown Court, Woods was jailed after being found guilty of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of a crash and failing to report a crash to police.

But Woods was caught driving while disqualified again when he was involved in the Bassett Avenue crash on January 26 this year.

The court heard the crash happened when Woods’ car collided with another vehicle as it attempted to make across the southbound carriageway.

Woods denied being the driver of the vehicle, but was found guilty following a trial at Southampton Magistrates’ Court.

Representing Woods, Jamie Gammon urged Judge Nicholas Rowland not to activate the suspended sentences, due to the “psychological impact” a custodial sentence would have on Woods’ family.

But Judge Rowland said due to Woods’ previous driving record, there could “only be one outcome”.

He said: “For someone with your bad driving record breaching a suspended sentence order can only lead to one outcome.”

Woods, of Portswood Road, Southampton, was jailed for a total of eight months and disqualified from driving for three years.
